painful latch at 5 weeks
NaturalMommy2008 · Pass a Note!
Posted 08 18 2008 My son had trouble learning to latch properly in the beginning, but by 2 1 2 weeks we were pros. Now at 5 weeks he refuses to latch on right. He wants just the nipple and screams murder when I correct him. Does anyone have any advice on how we can correct this problem?

Posted 08 18 2008 We went through the I only want the right I only want the left thing in the beginning, too. The best advice I got was to continue trying but not to force it. For some reason, some babies prefer one side to the other sometimes - could be pain from something (ear infection, sore gums, etc. ). For us it resolved itself. I would try to trick her sometimes - latch her properly on the one side, then keep her in the exact same hold but twist my body so she was nursing on the other side. After several days of her only eating on the one side and me pumping every feeding, she suddenly took the side she hadn t been taking as if it had never been an issue. Another thing to look for would be how you re holding your baby on each side - for me, it was more comfortable to hold her while she nursed on the left - since it felt awkward for me when she was on the right, I m sure it felt awkward for her!If you had been having issues with the one side from the beginning, I d think it had something to do with your nipple or some sort of birth trauma that was causing pain in your baby. but since it just started it doesn t seem like that is what it would be.
